How to calculate facade stone: square meters, linear meters, waste and pallets

Step by step to the quantity of stone you need for a villa or building facade, when to count in square meters and when in linear meters, and how much waste to add.

The most expensive mistake in a stone project is the quantity: either you order too little and wait for a second batch in a different color, or you order far too much and pay for stone you never use. The arithmetic is simple if you split it into four steps.

1. Net area in square meters

Measure every external wall to be clad: length × height. Add the walls up, then subtract openings (doors and windows) larger than one square meter. Small openings are usually not subtracted because cutting around them uses stone.

Example: a villa with four walls totalling 320 m² and 60 m² of openings → net area 260 m².

2. What is counted per linear meter

Some elements have a fixed height and are ordered by length, not area:

  • fixed-height courses (20, 25, 40, 50 cm)
  • sills and surrounds around windows and doors
  • cornices, corners and steps

Measure their total length in meters and set the height of each piece. The price is ≈ the m² price × the height in meters; the details are on the calculator page.

3. Waste

Always add waste for cutting at corners and openings and for pieces that break in transport and installation:

Facade Suggested waste
Plain walls with few openings 5%
A typical villa 7%
Many corners, arches and openings 10%

Our example: 260 × 1.07 ≈ 278 m².

4. Pallets

Facade stone 5 cm thick is loaded on pallets of about 10 m² each. 278 m² means roughly 28 pallets, which sets the number of trucks and the storage space on site. The pallets arrive wrapped and covered, and we send photos before loading.

Why we ask for the whole quantity at once

Because natural stone changes color from layer to layer in the same quarry. If you order 250 m² and then need 30 m² two months later, the second batch arrives in a different shade and stays on your facade. That is why we count waste honestly from the start and cut the whole quantity from one batch.

The quantity and price calculator runs the four steps for any stone and finish, gives you an estimated price and the number of pallets, and sends the order in one message.
